How Tim Walz went from NRA-endorsed to a gun-control advocate

Tim Walz, the Governor of Minnesota, made a significant shift in his stance on gun control during his political career. Walz, a Democrat, initially had the support of the National Rifle Association (NRA). In fact, as a congressman, he had an “A” rating from the NRA for his pro-gun rights stance.

However, Walz underwent a shift in his views following the numerous mass shootings in the United States, including the Parkland High School shooting in Florida. He started advocating for gun control, expressing that he was favouring “common sense” gun laws to prevent such incidents.

Walz stated that reflecting on the impact of gun violence in community and school settings, and listening and engaging with a variety of constituents, led him to consider measures like stronger background checks and the closing of gun show loopholes.

Walz was quoted as saying his change of heart was caused by, “listening to people, seeing things and getting more data”. He also mentioned that everyone should be open to evolving their views upon acquiring new information and perspective.

The shift in stance was met with mixed reactions, with gun control advocates applauding his new position, and some NRA supporters expressing disappointment.
