Dozens of Indian nationals in Italy freed from ‘slave-like’ working conditions on farms, police say

Indian authorities and Italy’s Carabinieri police force have reportedly freed several dozen Indian nationals from ‘slave-like’ working conditions on farms in Italy, according to police. The workers were allegedly subject to physical and verbal abuse, long working hours without sufficient rest, and were poorly paid. The police have launched an investigation into this matter, and efforts are being made to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected workers.

To help them, several organizations and legal entities are assisting in providing immediate necessities such as food, shelter, and medical attention to those affected. In addition, they are also working to help the workers return to India safely or to stay legally in Italy if they wish to do so.

The focus is also now on creating an increased awareness of human rights and labor rights among the Indian worker community overseas to prevent future incidents of this kind from occurring. Authorities also stress the importance of immediate reporting in case of witnessing or experiencing such exploitation.
