The Australian state of Victoria has recently appointed a dedicated official to focus on ‘Men’s Behavior Change’ amid rising attention and concerns over violence against women. This move follows significant public outcry and calls for more to be done in preventing and addressing domestic violence and disrespect towards women, especially in the context of recent high-profile cases that have made national headlines. The appointee will be responsible for coordinating policies and programs aimed at encouraging positive behavioral changes among men, with a focus on fostering respect and equality. The mission of the official will also include educating men about the impact of their actions, attitudes, and behaviors on women, with the aim of reducing instances of violence and harassment.
They would be working with MENM (Men’s Behavior Change Networks Melbourne), organisations that provide behaviour change programs in Victoria to help men who use family violence stop their violent and controlling behaviours, while keeping the safety and rights of women and children at its forefront. This appointment marks one of many steps being taken in the country to tackle the issue of violence against women.
In addition to this, the Victorian Government recently launched the “Enough is Enough” campaign as part of its broader efforts to prevent family violence. It also established a Royal Commission into Family Violence, and as part of its response, committed to implementing all 227 recommendations under its $2.9 billion investment.
